Moose Lottery Deadline! week of May 20th-May 28th

Let me start by saying this, I hope everyone that was hoping to enter this years Moose Lottery did so! The deadline for entering was Friday, May 25th at midnight! To all those who did not enter but wanted to,  I say, you snooze you lose! To all those that did enter I wish you the best of luck come June 15th.

I am not able to attend the lottery this year like in years past, I am trying to change my luck by not going, who knows, maybe I'll get drawn!

There is an alternative to not entering the lottery, it's the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire's annual Moose Permit Auction. Any bids must be postmarked and received at WHFNH no later then August 3rd!

Here is the link if you wish to place a bid;

As for this weeks pictures I had 630 pics on my Reconyx this week. Not all of the pictures are great, some with deer too far away and hidden by trees and brush to get a good look at the head gear, so a little zoom action was required. When I did this I noticed a pretty nice rack on a heavy bodied deer. This same deer has been on my camera several times in recent weeks. I also got a couple nice bulls on camera, I have a feeling this years racks on both deer and moose are going to be bigger and better then normal! Here are a couple pics from this past week.

Tell me what you think and let's come up with a name for the bull!

Here is a few trail cam pics taken last week! Captured all Moose and Deer this past week. Antlers are really starting to show nicely now on both the Deer and Moose. Still no calves yet but I believe I should have some this coming week, I did notice a set of very small tracks so hopefully mama will show him/her the camera!

Here are a few pics!

NH Turkey, my story!

This weekend was a busy weekend, I had to work Sat. morning, then I had to take care of a few errands before scouting for Sundays big turkey hunt. Sat. afternoon I was able to head out around 4 to find a good Tom to hunt and it didn't take long before I noticed a bird that would fit the bill. I ended up watching this Tom for 3 hours. He had 3 hens with him and would not let them get too far away before he reeled them back into what he thought was a safe distance. At around 7:30 Sat. evening the birds headed into the woods on route to their roosting tree. That was enough for me as I was happy with what I saw! I had a plan, I was able to go to the Barn Store of New England where they were more then happy to help me out with what I needed for the hunt. I had purchased a new Carry Lite Tom Decoy, and the next morning I would put it to the test.
Sunday morning I was up at 3;30 am and the plan was in action, I did not want to call at all, I wanted to see if the Decoy's I placed would do the job. I placed the Carry Lite Tom and a Hen at the 30 yard mark, took a seat and waited until 10minutes to 5 before I heard him let out his first gobble, the field I was hunting was lit up already and I knew he saw the decoy's and was not happy, he continued to gobble, he sounded mad, for 25 minutes I heard him gobble, off in the distance I could hear the hens trying to get his attention, but he was fixed on the Tom Strutting his stuff with HIS girlfriend! Around quarter past 5am I saw him gliding into the field and as soon as he touched down, the strutting had begun but only for a split second, then it was a full charge to the guy stealing his lady! The fight was about to begin! Being me, and the fact I dont like fights, I had to neutralize the situation with 1 shot! The rest is history!

So I guess the Decoys worked like a charm, without making a sound. I had lots of fun this morning listening to the turkeys and watching this Tom react to another on his turf.

The next thing I did was went to check my moose camera, I am excited and waiting to see calves on camera! I know some of you will think no way, it's too early but Moose are in the deer family and lots of does have given birth to fawns as early as the end of March this year. So if the moose are following that same early season schedule then we should have some calves already running around. I will be sure to add pics if I should get any early calves. Below are a couple random pics from last weeks trail cam!

Great wildlife weekend!

This weekend was a weekend full of animals, big and small! It started off with me heading north to a favorite spot of mine to look for antlers, I was in search of the match to one I had found 2 weeks prior. As I was making my way up the Mtn I met a black Bear heading down the Mtn on the same trail I was on. Once I made it to the top of the Mtn and took a few steps into the woods I jumped a buck out of his bed. I never found the antler I was looking for but I did find 2 antlers, 1 older moose antler and an antler from what was probably an 8 point  buck. (See Pics)

After leaving the north country I made it home in time to pick up my youngest Niece Haley, and go look for turkeys for Sunday's hunt. We left for our first location and when we arrived we found 2 yearling bear cubs and mama bear in the corner of the field munching on grasses. (See Pic) I was able to take a picture with my cell phone but they were a little far away so it's not the best pic. After watching the bears for 15 minutes or so we decided to continue our task for turkeys so we headed to our next spot and saw a deer ready to cross the road where I usually park my truck, she bounced away and we continued our short walk in where we jumped another deer, this one crossed the field 20 yards in front of us.

Today, Sunday May 6th I went to check my trail camera and had a few good pics of moose but I got a real nice picture of a Black Bear, (See Pic Below)
