Well today did not go at all like expected! Got up at 1:30 am to leave by 2am, drove 3 hours to get to my Moose honey hole by first light only to find out that the gate that has never been locked before was LOCKED! A huge project is in the works so the gates were locked! The water levels in all the lakes, ponds and marshes are way over their banks! I canoed several other ponds while I was up there to check plant growth and it looks like it might be a couple of weeks before the vegetation that moose love will be ready to be consumed! When this happens it will be a fun time to take a wildlife/moose tour. On a brighter note, I spoke to the person in charge of the gate and it looks like I might be getting a key to the gate, if all goes as planned.

Calves 2011
Cows will be giving birth to their calves very soon if not already, depending on when they were breed last fall. I have what looks to be 2 pregnant cows caught on my trail camera, so on Friday I will be going to my camera location and waiting for one of these ladies to pass by. I plan to follow 1 of these cows for the day or until she gives birth in hopes of getting this on video, it is that time of season where this will be happening. I just hope I am not too late. Anyone wanting to see this video will need to sign up for my blogs by submitting their email on my blogger page at http://www.swampdonkeyadventures.blogspot.com/
Moose Fact # 10
AGGRESSION:
Moose are typically not aggressive towards humans but as with any wild animal they demand respect! Moose attack more people then Bears and Wolves combined! This being said, moose should not be thought of as dangerous, although they can be very dangerous. A moose is most dangerous in the following situations: A) when startled or harassed by people. B) In the presence of a dog. The moose has a natural knowledge and fear of Wolves, so the moose may think your dog is a wolf and try to attack you, the dog or both. C) Bulls during the rut or breeding season can be very aggressive due to the high levels of Hormones and may charge on occasion. D) Cows with Calves are very, very protective and if humans get too close they will attack. Cows with calves should never be approached under any conditions.
Swamp Donkey Adventures, offers several Wildlife/Moose tours including Canoe, Moose Licks and Moose Tracks as well as Guided Hunts for both Moose and Wild Turkey! Check us out at http://www.swampdonkeyadventures.com/

Moose Fact # 9
SEX DETERMINATION:
Moose sex can be determined in several ways; by tracks, Vulva patch and by the presence of antlers, which is the easiest way and most common way for most people in determining sex. Tracks left by cows tend to be pointed or sharp tipped, more defined and narrower then those left by a bull. The Vulva patch is a much easier way to tell but with this a cow must be turned away from you or walking away to see. This is a white patch of hair just under the tail of a moose and is only present on a cow.

Moose Fact # 8
In the next several days http://www.swampdonkeyadventures.com/ will be giving you a series of facts that you may or may not already know about moose. Please feel free to comment on any and all blogs
Did you know that moose have no upper front teeth! Instead they have a very tough tongue, lips and gums, which help when eating woody vegetation. Moose are Herbivores and eat many types of plants and fruits. Moose need to consume approximately 9500 calories a day to maintain its body weight so they are constantly browsing on non-grasses and Forbs. A moose requires about 50% of its diet to consist of sodium, which they get from aquatic plants and salt that has accumulated on roadsides during the winter months.

Moose Fact #6
RARE:
Did you know that if a bull becomes castrated due to fighting during the rut or by accident; that the bull will immediately shed it’s current set of antlers and start to re-grow another set, this new set will be deformed and misshaped and he will wear this set for the rest of his life never shedding them again.

Moose Fact #5
ANTLERS:
Bulls will drop their antlers after the breeding season is complete, typically in December but have been known to carry them well into late February. Each spring, moose will re-grow their antlers with a more impressive set then the year before as the bull matures and eventually around the age of 11 start to decline and become less impressive with age and start to lose body/muscle mass also.

BIRTH:
Cows have an eight-month gestation period before giving birth to 1 calf and may give birth to 2 calves if food is plentiful. Calves are born in late May to mid June depending on when they were breed. Calves are born with a reddish hue in contrast to the brownish color of the adult. The Calves will remain with the mother until just before the birth of their next young at which point the mother will then run off the yearling to fend for itself.

Breeding takes place in late September thru October and some cows may even be breed as late as November and December. Cows will not typically breed until they are 3.5 years old and will only breed once eggs have been released into the ovaries. Once the eggs reach the ovaries the cow then has 24-48 hours to be breed by a bull. If she is not breed in that time period the eggs will then be discharged and will repeat the entire cycle 25 days later until she is breed. This is when you hear the term second rut come into play. Bulls and Cows will find each other during this time in a number of ways including scent and calls. Scent is dispersed by both sexes by Secretion of liquid thru glands and urinating in wallows. The vocalization of moose during this time is a great experience with the cow letting the bull know that she is ready to breed. The bulls are Polygamous and will seek out and breed multiple cows during this cycle. Breeding of cows however does not come so easy to these mature bulls as they will have to battle each other for the right to breed. The young will be pushed away by the more dominant bulls and will not be allowed to take part. Some will die for the right to breed!

Moose (Alces alces) Are the largest of all deer species. They are an even-toed herbivorous mammal. The name "mus" or "moos" comes from the Algonquian language of the North America Indian and means "Twig Eater" because this is what moose were often seen eating!

Well yesterday I went and checked my moose Trail camera in hopes of seeing and capturing our first moose of the spring season. I ended up getting 170 pictures on my camera. Some pics of deer and some of moose. looks like 4 different moose including 2 adult bulls, 1 yearling bull and 1 cow, also had several deer captured on the camera, 2 looked like they might be pretty decent deer come this fall.
Also , yesterday I found time to take myself turkey hunting and shot a pretty decent Tom weighing 19 lbs with a 10 inch beard and 3qtr inch spurs. Went out today with my 14 year old niece, the day started off promising with 5 birds gobbling behind us. That is where the promising morning ended! After not seeing anything on our morning set up we decided to move to another great spot, only seeing 1 strutting Tom all day and that was on posted property! We will give it another try next weekend.
Until next time, enjoy the outdoors and be safe while doing it!

Hi everyone, wanted to let you know that Friday I am going to be venturing into moose areas in hopes of getting some good spring moose video. Also on Friday, I will be checking a couple of trail cameras that I hung out several weeks ago and I hope to be able to share some great pics with everyone. Although, the moose movement from winter areas to these spring areas looks to be running late this year by a couple weeks due to the longer then normal winter. In a few weeks the female moose will be seeking out areas to give birth to this years calves and I will be trying to find these areas so I can catch it all on video.
Until next time!
Enjoy what nature has to offer but treat it with respect so our children can enjoy it as well!
Thank you!
