Moose Fact #4

The next several days http://www.swampdonkeyadventures.com/ will be giving you a series of facts that you may or may not already know about moose. Please feel free to comment on any and all blogs
BIRTH:
Cows have an eight-month gestation period before giving birth to 1 calf and may give birth to 2 calves if food is plentiful. Calves are born in late May to mid June depending on when they were breed. Calves are born with a reddish hue in contrast to the brownish color of the adult. The Calves will remain with the mother until just before the birth of their next young at which point the mother will then run off the yearling to fend for itself.

  1. That is sort of sad that the mother runs the young off when she has another. :( I would not make a good moose mother.

  2. Well, I know how you feel but unfortunately, thats how it works, the calves that are run off are no longer calves, they are now 1 year old(yearlings) at this point and need to fend for themselves.
